Thirty Years & Counting…

9th February

On the twenty fifth day of the first month of this year, I reached three decades of existence. Yep, 30. THREE-ZERO… read em and weep.

Thirty years sounds a lot. An awful lot. If anything, it doesn’t even seem plausible. I mean, that’s old as Back To The Future examples… If I’m honest with you, it hasn’t really registered yet despite Marty McFly’s best efforts.

I did start to do a mini self-assessment thought. Am I happy with the way life has turned out so far? Have I accomplished things I set out to do by now? Is there anything I would have done differently?..  I guess in general its been pretty unpredictable at times, and there’s been plenty of experiences across the board. Work, travelling, relationships (all the usual answers I guess). What I can say is that without all of that I …

Screen Social @ The Book Club

20th January

This week Angela and I went along to The Book Club, a neat little venue in Shoreditch to check out “Screen Social“, a new series of charity Audio Visual events where Music Videos, Animation, short films & experiments are spliced with movie ‘soundtracks of your lives’. The events are hosted by Cannes in a Van and enables upcoming animators and film-makers  to have their work shown in front of a live audience. Many if not all of the work shown was new to everyone who attended.

In addition, there was a performance by special guests “The Winchester Club” of their new album Negative Liberty. The album was inspired by the seminal documentary series “The Trap: What Happened to our Dream of Freedom” by Adam Curtis. Curtis’s series was split into three one-hour programs, and attempted to explore the development of our …

DeviousCreations Ver 5.0… Mobile Friendly!

19th January

A new year, a new look. Gone are the full screen image backgrounds and busy sidebar – say hello to simple, minimal and more importantly.. fully responsive browsing.

When I first moved over to WordPress, I spent forever looking for a theme that I felt would best display my work. However, recently I began to realise that the sites appearance lacked particular contrast between it and the work it was supposed to be presenting. Whole screen images look great, but they also detract from the rest of the site’s content. There were also some particularly blocky elements to the design I grew tired of. Most of all though, I disliked the fact that it simply did not work on any type of mobile platform, and appeared broken.

Step forward Epicera’s ShapeShifter 2 Super Skeleton dynamic wordpress …

366 New Days…

3rd January

2011 is dead. Long live 2012.

As we simultaneously (and conflictingly) attempt to finish off the remains of the Christmas feast and contemplate a new pair of running shoes to help burn off the “holiday tummy”, an new year has officially begun.

2011 was a roller-coaster of a year, both on a global and personal scale. It also held much excitement, such as my trip to Angela’s family and friends in Singapore & Malaysia, seeing impressive exhibitions such as Wim Crouwel, Takashi Murakami & Out of This World, and (finally!) becoming a Senior Lighting Designer. However, with that behind, the attention focuses on the new possibilities ahead.

I got to work with some great clients last year, on a variety of freelance projects. If I have one resolution this year, it’s to send the productivity into overdrive! Prepare for more “devious …

My Mad Bad Audience Experience..

19th December

Last month, Angela and I went to the BBC Wood Lane studios to be members of an audience for a new C4 comedy quiz show, called the Mad Bad Ad Show. Hosted by Marc Dolan and featuring team captains Micky Flanagan & Mark Watson, the show aims to take a light-hearted look at the world of advertising, including classic commercials, ads from abroad and a weekly contest where the audience votes on adverts made by the two teams for fictitious products. This was the first time we had been in such an environment, and weren’t exactly sure what to expect. (I did however have a feeling we might be “clapping en cue”.)

After waiting for a couple of hours in line, (at least six different programs can be filmed on any given night, so there’s a queue that stretches right down …
